Traditional Wisdom for Conscious Food Systems

On the 15th November The Conscious Food Systems Alliance convened a Collective Inquiry on “Traditional Wisdom for Conscious Food Systems – Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Perspectives” to explore what inner capacities and traditional wisdom for regenerative food systems mean from the perspective of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), how these can be supported to promote regenerative and conscious food systems, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

The session was a participatory dialogue in which we shared the outcomes of the CoFSA Traditional Wisdom Dialogue series held between June and September 2023 with more than 30 representatives of IPLCs. This has been captured in a short report that was released publicly, highlighting:

  1. What does CoFSA agenda on inner capacities and traditional wisdom for regenerative food systems mean from the perspective of IPLCs;
  2. CoFSA collaboration with IPLCs and work on traditional wisdom;
  3. Discuss recommendations on IPLCs engagement and the role of traditional wisdom in CoFSA and next steps.

This session is a first step to discuss and develop this field of work together. Join us in co-creating a space for joint learning, collaboration and support around this essential theme.

Turning the world’s food systems into sustainable systems is complex, and to activate transformation we need to promote traditional and regenerative food systems that Indigenous Peoples have been nurturing for centuries. The Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) that promote regenerative and ancestral techniques for sustainable management of forests, food production, and conservation efforts are the result of long and deep observations on nature cycles, as well as a deep spiritual awareness and connection to oneself, others, and nature. LINKS have been passed down from generation to generation through rituals, ceremonies and oral tradition. This cultural and “living” component is the result of complex and historical processes rooted in a territory, a community, and their surrounding biodiversity. Cultural and consciousness approaches are increasingly recognized as the key to unlock systems change.

The Conscious Food Systems Alliance has therefore prioritized the role of traditional wisdom for conscious food systems.
